Introduction
Have you ever typed in the word “college” and asked Google to
give you a list of synonyms? When doing this, words such as “club”, “union”, and “alliance” are at the top of the list. One thing that may come up in people’s minds when they hear these words is the fact that these synonyms make it seem like a college is some sort of society that only few get accepted into. The fact of the matter is that college is what the synonyms describe. College is a choice and people have to be able to accept the conditions when accepted into this “club”; conditions including the cost. As much as students and their parents dream of free college, that idea can never be any more than a dream. But there is one solution that Americans can consider. When people hear about other countries having “free college”, they ask, “If it works for them, why can’t it work for us?” Well, college is not completely free anywhere. There are always hidden costs or other reasons why college prices are lower in other countries; one of these countries being France. But France is able to manage this by having very high standards for students to be able to get into what they call “Grandes Ecoles”. These types of schools “have no equivalent[s] in the USA”, because of how hard they are to get into (Rochefort). The proposal I have is to start basing the United States’ education system off of France’s, to please the people who despise college debt and also to better the education in the United States.
